The spoked SUN gold wheels on my red '79 have an anodized finish, I believe.
1. What is an anodized finish/coating?
2. Is it more durable than powder coating?
Any info would be appreciated.

Which is superior ?? Powder coating gives superior "chemical" ( road salt) protection (unless it's chipped or scratched) Anodizing actually bonds within the structure of the metal & is quite hard.
If you ride on salted roads go with Powder Coat........

In simple terms: Powder coating is a "coating". A powder is being applied to the surface and then baked on. "Anodizing" is a change of the outer layer of the material (aluminum) through an electrical charge. The part is used as the "anode".
"Anodizing" produces a thin hard layer which results in a shiny surface. You are still left with the bare aluminum material unless a color supplement is used to produce a different appearance.
