Sound deadening material?

Post by Terry »

I'm looking for less sound around my ears inside one of my helmets. Is there any sound proofing material that is thin enough to insert into the ear space inside the helmet? No thicker than 1/2" or so.

Someone on another forum told me to get some lead vinyl sheeting, the kind used to soundproof airplane cabins. I found a site that sells the stuff and they want $10 a yard (all I need is about 6"-HA). Wonder if it would work? It is very thin. Anyone know about this stuff?

Nah, Lead poisoning... Not that I have brain cells left to kill, but it messes with you other vital functions also. I'd avoid it too close to skin/breathing.

Pillow batting. I place an extra pillow over my head when my wife snores!

No Terry, That won't work for this application. Lead vinyl sheeting is put on wide surfaces to act as a kinetic damper to prevent "drumming" . What you would need for this application is an acoustic damper, Bill was right on this ..... 8)

The thinnest material I am familiar with is 1/16" thick. It is a vinyl sound barrier sheet that can be used as an additional sound blocker in walls etc.
We used in on the insides of the steel panels of our hydraulic test stand unit. Something similar and maybe more widely available is a sound deadening material used in car audio installations. Probably same thickness.

That and teeth grinding made me move into a spare upstairs bedroom.
