Carbs-Jet passages plugged

Post by thomasgeorgi »

I have been doing a much needed carb cleaning. They are still in a bank, the floats, slide tops, jets, and etc have been removed. I really don't want to separate the banks. Spraying into the main passage of the number three carb accelerator pump produces a nice stream out the number three nozzle, but nothing out any of the others. I shrunk ( is that a word? ) some heat shrink so that I could slip it over the nozzle and thereby force the Berrymans out the other nozzles. I also used the same heat shrink to try and force the spray up stream thru the nozzles first. I only got the third carb to work. I sprayed thru the main passage and then thru each of the nozzles as best as I could; three times in two-three hours for a solid week. Then I tried the same with Marvel Mystery oil and PB Catalyst. Nothing has had any improvement. These passages may have been plugged since I bought the bike ( '79 ) in '83. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site thomasgeorgi, I'm no expert on Keihins but for stubborn blockages, soaking in Berrymans for a long time or use of an ultrasonic cleaner may work.....Failing that, you are looking at mechanical removal ( if accessible )

And after a lot of soaking, maybe some compressed air. Compressed air and a rubber tipped blow gun finally fixed my stubborn clogged carbs.

100 lbs of compressed air will open them up. Are you sure you are have the right angle on your spray tip into #3 accelerator pump passage? You have to angle the tip just right to get cleaner to blow left and right. They may not be as plugged as you think.

I am not sure that I had any angle on the spray nozzle, but I did shrink some heat shrink so that it barely fit over the #3 accel jet/nozzle. I thought that would force the berrymans out any other jet/nozzle. It didn't. Was my thinking wrong. Thanks for the input.
