Hey All......
I have two engines that have had extra chrome applied somewhere in the dim dark past...my 79 CBX and a 1970 CB750.
Is there any relatively simple method of removing chrome from engine cases? We dont have a chromer in our neck of the woods so do it yourself is kinda necessary, and way more fun in a warped kinda way.
Thx

Re: de-chroming engine parts
De-chroming is relatively cheap. I had a bunch of stuff de-chromed recently and it was about $250. Any show chrome shop will do it. I'd send it out and be done with it. I probably had 3 or 4 sets of crappy chrome covers for CBXs that are worthless unless de-chromed. Spending money on chroming CBX covers is a real waste.

After it is de-chromed is it suitable to paint or does it have to be powder-coated?

No, it’s fine to paint or polish as you need.

Re: de-chroming engine parts
Chrome is generally stripped chemically, using nitric acid. Tank is heated. Ignore urban legends saying Coke will strip it. It’s worth respectfully reminding the shop,to rinse off you aluminum parts carefully. They are more accustomed to working with steel. We have restored plated parts to very good condition, stripping and refinishing through various means.
