Death to teensy rust spots

Post by Hobbes »

Well, my Kerker exhaust is collecting a buncha little baked on blemishes and, horror of horrors, some teensy rust spots.

I've used 'metal magic' which sure shines the chrome up nice, but some of the spots are pretty stubborn.

I've read that SOS pads are pretty good at rust obliteration, but they seem kinda abrasive and drastic.

Anybody out there got a favorite chrome rejuvenator/rust pinpoint annihilator they can steer me toward?

Much obliged,

-Edward Holm

Not seeing what you have for a rust problem, you might try NevrDull. its a cotton wading soaked in (something) that really cleans up chrome finishes with NO scratches.
It ain't the destination, its the journey...

You can also try Solvol Autosol. Its been around for years. Also brings out the shine in Aluminum.

Hydroflouric acid (chrome wire wheel cleaner) does the trick, make sure you wear gloves and don't breath vapors. Rinse w/ H2O. And 0000 steel wool will assist w/ heavy crud. Finish w/ Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. Of course, pipes should be removed first, otherwise you are missing the parts that need it most. That acid will ruin clearcoat, watch it!

drastic measures

I tried the NevrDull, and it worked pretty well after a few applications.

Some rust devils remained, so I bit the bullet and got out the SOS pads, egads!

Dipped 'em in water, pinched 'em down to a small surface, and gently rubbed the exact spot where the rust was... a few times with rinsing in between worked better and safer on the chrome than a single cawabunga attack scrubbing. Doing it almost like scraping them with your thumbnail, with the SOS pad between it and the chrome, worked great.

So now the canisters look good, and it's on to the really scary headers.

Glutton for punishment,

-Ed

I just joined this site today so I know this is way late.

PLEASE, PLEASE. PLEASE...Be very careful with hydroflouric acid.

Your skin will absorb it. This acid is used in varios plating and stipping processes. I have been informed by co-workers in the Aviation Industry

It attacks the calcium in the bones. GLOVES AND LOTS OF VENTILATION ARE A MUST.

Excelent points Superside.

Ed when you move on up to the headers try BlueAway to remove the heat discoloration then follow up with the NeverDull.
